Protect yourself from data mining

You know how Google, for example, keep records of all the searches anyone makes online using their service; to counteract this I not only use lots of different computers and search engines, I also periodically makes searches for things that don’t really interest me that much – you know stuff like “flower arranging” (not something I care about), “love and romance” (which seems to turn up a lot of dating services, not something I need) or “chemical composition of DNA” (which actually pulls up links to loads of really interesting info, although a bit off track from my more usual concerns) – and what I’d really like to see posted in the comments here are other examples of things people think it would be good to search for (or already search for), just to leave false trails for the data miners….
And while you’re at it don’t forget to check – http://www.stewarthomesociety.org – you know it makes (no) sense!

Yes Mr. Home, but which poor bastard at Google has the job of wading through all tjhe millions of webhitsl, to see if it has any cohesive meaning? And what could they really judge from a lot of the information that searches brought up ? I mean, anyone who is deeply inqusitive about life, probably surfs a whole range of sites — including those which he/she may totally disagree with — simply to keep themselves informed of a vast range of views.
My guess is, google wouldn’t havemuch interest in “people like us”, whose web searches probably bring up hits on avant gard lit, and other fringe stuff — my guess is they probably want to dredge through search hits which would generate stats to maximise ways of making more filthy lucre, to add to ways of screwing people commercially…..
Search engine hits on Battalie, Lukacz, Derrida, Badiou, punk rock, De Sade, and even nauseating people like Evola, anarcho nihilist fascists etc, Rimbaud, and dub probably wouldn’t interest them much….

Some great suggestions here… And strange that Google SE0 should have such a great funny take – makes me wanna tango and foxtrot and do some other Latin dances.
Howling Wiz, I think you’re maybe right but why not confuse them further. The ads and suggestions I get rarely make much sense and I guess precisely because they are too eclectic for the data miners to work out. But actually I was talking to someone at a party recently and they said this was exactly why Google are fixated on people like me and you. Coz we’re the last bastion of the unknown and if they can crack us with an algorithm then they’ve got the whole planet soon up – and there’s no guarantee that we’ll win and they’ll loose!
And Dire I’m gonna try alien phone sex right now… hope it ain’t the name of some Alien Sex Fiend tribute band! Got stuff like “hristina Guevara previously worked in the phone sex trade before this recent event, he said. … A twice-deported illegal alien and his phone-sex wife. …” And of course Alien Sex Fiend lyrics! And phone sex lines…

The Data miners strike: Special taskforce for the Preparation of the Abolition of Money (the SPAM Humanifesto)
LII The significant difference between the development of hypergraphy and the developments in hypertext, e.g. the semantic web, is that the latter is a psychopathic geometrical colonialism. Tim Berners-Lee first conceptualised the World Wide Web at the Centre for European Research Nuclear (CERN). The programme on which the system is based equates people with files – authors with their texts: ie the perspective makes no difference between people and texts and other objects. This anti-materialist perspective is based in de-dimensionalising geometry where a person is always located within space, time or meaning, rather than being the origin and source of all space, time and meaning – as is the case with situmetry.
LIII
The quantum computer therefore reduces all human perspective to its own function of data transfer. The Lettrist perspective show that the creation force, the innovation of any sort is not human capital but labour. We therefore focus on these workers who can directly intervene into its operation and bring it into direct contact with the proletariat at large. For this purpose we propose a new miners union. The new data miners who are emerging as the field has emerged over the world can now link up with other miners – from minerals and metals, to factory workers as well as peasants and others working on the land, on on any sort of capital.
LIV
The data miners are called on to stop working on government data and commercial collection and begin to consolidate the lines of communication between workers along their lines of production – in the raw materials – in the processing and in the use of all materials used in their work. This is urgently required of course in the arms industry where owners and workers of the land where these commodities are used, miners of minerals and materials, factories of production, the researchers and developers along with the soldiers and users of the commodities must come together to discuss and decide on their future use.
This however must be based on the immediate organization of workers in this space, time and value. In attacking capitalism we hereby link with the workers / creators and proletariat who:
• created the computers, hardware and software which we used to create this text
• created the electricity
• created the buildings we are in right now
• created the ideas which we have used

The Phenomenon of Reification
I still remember burrowing in the huge hayloft in the old barn; exploring the Victorian house, with its old-fashioned furniture and intriguing things like a clothes chute that ran from the second floor all the way down to the musty basement full of strange curios and contraptions left over from the previous century; or traipsing after my grandfather, a spry old guy still working vigorously in the fields in his late eighties.
The horrible features of imperialistic warfare are attributable to the discrepancy between the tremendous means of production and their inadequate utilization in the process of production – in other words, to unemployment and the lack of markets. The essence of commodity-structure has often been pointed out. Its basis is that a relation between people takes on the character of a thing and thus acquires a ‘phantom objectivity’, an autonomy that seems so strictly rational and all-embracing as to conceal every trace of its fundamental nature: the relation between people.Imperialistic war is a rebellion of technology which collects, in the form of “human material,” the claims to which society has denied its natural materrial. Instead of draining rivers, society directs a human stream into a bed of trenches; instead of dropping seeds from airplanes, it drops incendiary bombs over cities; and through gas warfare the aura is abolished in a new way,The essence of commodity-structure has often been pointed out. Its basis is that a relation between people takes on the character of a thing and thus acquires a ‘phantom objectivity’, an autonomy that seems so strictly rational and all-embracing as to conceal every trace of its fundamental nature: the relation between people.

Hey, the knitting pattern revolution starts HERE!
Depending on whether or not you frame the search terms in speech marks or not, Googling Michael Jackson used to yield anywhere between (approximately) 32,000,000 and 49,600,000 hits. That all changed when he croaked, of course. Leaped to 35,000,000 to 63,000,000 dependent on whether or not you put the search terms in quotation marks within a couple of hours of the news breaking. By 7am on the 26th June, it was at 37,200,000 or 65,500,000, and three days later it was 49,000,000 or 84,000,000 depending. Within a week, it had hit 88,300,000 / 50,300,000. Insanity. Nothing like the premature death of a global celebrity to get the media buzzing. So while the Internet makes snooping easier, it can have its downsides.

If you use Firefox web browser (http://getfirefox.com ) then I recommend using the Customise Google extension http://www.customizegoogle.com/ which one can use to randomly change the google cookie thus anonymise yourself which is even better than blocking the google cookie. It also can block Google ads from google site and adwords from other sites.
Also on can use adblock extension to remove other ads. http://adblockplus.org
As well as randomizing the google cookie one can have a changing IP address with Tor http://www.torproject.org/
One can in meantime use Google Scrapper
http://www.scroogle.org/cgi-bin/scraper.htm
to search using google without it being able to collect your searches.
